There are 2 entries:
Purple Velvet Plant (Gynura aurantiaca 'Purple Passion')
Purple Velvet Plant (Gynura aurantiaca)

Is 'PP' truly a cultivar that is somehow different from the plain species, or just one of the nicknames of the species in general?

I agree, I see no type of Gynura in that photo. Maybe @csandt mistakenly uploaded it to the wrong place? I've done that a couple of times myself when uploading numerous photos.

After looking at the Missouri Botanical Garden description and photo (see below), I think the plant label must be referring to the purple-edged leaf in front of the plant label. For this reason, please delete my image and accept my apology for misinterpreting Longwood's label.
