Agree with Seil on the BYPASS pruners. Blades that work like scissors do. Never Anvil. I'm not sure what those are even good for.

Also -- yes -- for thick, woody canes, you will need loppers -- and a pruning saw is another very good thing to have. The FISKARS saws shown here:
