Being an oriental one would expect a need for a definite acid soil. Although this is probably best, I have also found them remarkably tolerant of neutral soil. My best one grows in mostly shade. Drainage is very important. If you garden in clay soil, keep it on the dry side. L. auratum prefers moist soil, but in moist clay soils the species won't survive nearly as long.
