Dot,.I did not see Born to be Wild, but I did manage to get a sf Raspberry Mountain from Abundantdaylilies back in October, I also got a sf of Born to Run from Mike44 for only 10.00, an auction gone wrong there! I was just happy to get them and they will get big soon enough. I didn't even think to look for the seeds. It's still kind of new though, I noticed all were double fans and have been sold just in the last two months. So maybe next year some people will sell seeds from these.

Green Grin! Shirley, I love Game Face!!....also Gossip Girl.
I added Priscilla's Smile yesterday, and the first of December I added Azure Butterfly, Princess Diana, Snow Crystal and Chang Dynasty.

We're still waiting to hear back from them; Kim emailed and changed the order 2 days ago and need a total but haven't heard anything. I figured since Susan heard back right away and Dot got her confirmation we'd at least hear back today but no such luck.

Susan, Born to be Wild has not been offered yet. There is a photo of it in the AHS database
with the registration date.

Born to Run is a nice red. It blooms very well till frost.

Guess it will be awhile before I hear from them too then. With so many requests
for orders, they may already be sold out of the ones I want. Maybe we will hear
from them over the weekend.

Shirley, did you check your list against the sold out list that they have up?

BORN TO BE WILD is beautiful, how did you find out about it if it hasn't been offered? Does he send his friends a memo. Blinking

Susan, I checked their sold out list before beginning to look at their offerings.

If you click on advanced search in the AHS database, and put in the name of the hybridizer, it
will show all plants registered by that particular hybridizer.

However, I was looking at plants for sell on the Pierce website, and noticed
the name Born to be Wild in the cross. I didn't see that particular parent listed for sell, so I
looked in the database for it.

I often do this to research whatever traits there are of the parents or grandparents
involved with the cross. For example, if I am looking for large size in a seedling and see
the parents or grandparents of a plant are of small size, then I won't choose a pollen or pod parent with
the same background. I will choose one that has large size parents. Of course, not often
do seedlings turn out the way one imagines them. It's fun to try though. It's still like
Christmas morning seeing the first bloom on a plant that is crossed by one's self.

It's about choosing what to put together that has the characteristics that one is
aiming for, and learning what to expect from each plant after using it a few times.

I have some crosses in the house now from BORN to RUN about 12 inches tall. Can't wait to see if they
bloom next year. They probably won't, since they will be planted outside in the spring,
and then bloom the year after that. I did have about 60 to bloom at 10 and 11 months
this year. That was a first for me.

Sounds like you do your homework. I did not know you could look up daylilies by hybridizer. There certainly are a lot of hidden tools on this website, designed to help people keep track of their plants weather they buy or sell. It has been very helpful for me also that I can look things up because like you I want to know what the plant is going to do, not just how does it look. The pictures are wonderful too!
I will be anxious to see how your crosses turn out, you have a lot. Are they under lights? What is your set up like?

Susan,

Born to Run and Born to be Wild are two different daylilies. Born to be Wild has not been introduced yet. It was pictured in the Daylily Journal that we get 4 times a year. I saw it and looked it up in the AHS database. Guy is still using it extensively to set pods on, and is holding back on it until he is done using it a LOT. So maybe next year Karen said, if not the spring, then maybe in the fall.

Just got a daylily journal today. I hate to be redundant, but I really do enjoy it. I think they do a great job. Its the only publication that I dont tear out what I want and throw the rest away. I keep them fully intact and often go back and look thru them for certain articles.

Susan, I have a very simple set up for seedlings. Don't use lights here, just a south
facing window or rather windows. The plants do get a bit on the spindly side, but
they grow out of that really fast once planted in the ground in the spring.

The pots are saved pint cottage cheese cups that have been microwaved with the
potting soil in them at a high enough temp to kill bacteria and fungus. So far that is
working as I don't have fungus gnats or damp off. So I guess you could say I
recycle with the cups. Green Grin! And the cups do get a bleach wash before
microwaving them.

Many of the seedlings will be pretty garden plants, and maybe a few that are
something to register. I have not registered any yet. Been doing this for five years
or so, and if the few that I am watching do well next season, I will register some.

Last year I had over 2500 seedlings in the house over the winter, and this year,
around 1000. I do put several seeds in each cup, because if I didn't, I would not
have space for them. Trying to cut down on the work, and need to reduce the
number even more next year. Now, If I would just listen to myself.

Anyway, I love doing this, and I love the flowers.

Great idea!! Just what I have and that's a good south and east window together and a ton of sun till afternoon. I got a new plant stand last year and used it for plants that I brought in for the winter. (no more of that)
I can use it for seeds, I have some in the frig. right now and I am doing just a few at a time. (5)
How long do you microwave the soil? My mother had a friend who would bake soil for one hour at 300°, but it would stick-up the house.
Yikes!! You had 2500 seedlings in your house?? Where did you put them all?? Where did you get them all?? Do you collect them from your own plants?? Sounds like you are having a lot of fun, I hope to see some of your seedlings!!

The potting soil has an odor, but not a bad one. I microwave the pot until the
soil is steaming, being careful not to get burnt when taking it out of the microwave.
It doesn't take very long to see steam, a few minutes. The soil is damp when I put it
in the microwave.

Hubby made a wooden rack with shelves that fit the size of window or double door
space. It works. Daylilies are very forgiving for the most part, and rather easy to
work with. They do have "bad hair" days like us sometimes if the season doesn't
provide the best growing conditions. Green Grin!

The seedlings are from my own crosses. I do get a good rate of germination, thankfully,
and sometimes too good. Like last year with so many.

They are planted outside in beds prepared for them. Have two beds ready for new seedlings,
and another one for evaluation of last year's seedlings. The seedlings are planted rather close together outside.
About 6 inches apart with about 8 inches between rows. About 40 or so will be kept
for evaluation, and the rest are composted for various reasons.

I forget the size of the beds. They are not small though. 4 to 5 feet wide and many feet long.

Sounds good.! After you 'cook' the soil and it cools off, do you add any fertilizer or perlite or anything to the soil before you plant your seeds?
I am glad you have a good plan, because I have tried a lot of stuff to get rid of gnats and nothing seems to work. There is always a gnat on my Monitor and it drives me crazy, I won't kill him for nothing but it drives me crazy. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

I keep bananas around 24/7 so I get gnats quite often. One time it seemed like I had 100s of them because I had bananas, watermelon, and other fruit that brouht them in. What I do for ordinary house gnats (may work for fungus gnats also) is pour some cheap wine (the darker the better, I use Merlot or Shiraz) into a coffee cup (about 1/2 full or a little less) and then put saran wrap over the top and make sure it's pulled tight and is big enough to stay secure around the cup. Now poke holes in the top near the center with a toothpick, I usually poke about 10 or so. The gnats will go in after the wine and not be able to find the holes to ge back out. I put the cup wherever the gnats are flying around the most. It may tae them a day or two to figure out where the smell is coming from, but they will eventually go to the cup.

I don't add amendments to the soil. Just fertilize. Am fertilizing more this year to
see if it makes a difference. When I first began with seeds, I didn't fertilize until they were planted outside.
Some of the soils have time release fertilizer already in them. I have read that is a bit
hard on seedlings, although I use it for veggie garden seedlings, and they do okay.

I've tried different things too. Used a vacuum cleaner one year. Didn't want to use
chemicals inside. That took way too much time and surveillance. This works great
for me or I would not keep doing it this way. I've already done the experimenting.
Half of the plants are downstairs and half upstairs. One year I used the same potting
soil for all except the ones downstairs did not get the microwaving treatment. Downstairs
had lots of gnats, the ones upstairs were microwaved, and did not have any gnats. That was
enough evidence for me.

Also, I like the cottage cheese cups because they don't melt in the microwave. When I
used the red drink cups from one of the box stores, a few were slightly melted.
That's another way to gauge the timing of the microwave. Seeing the soil steam
without melting the cups.

I've tried that too, Michele, using vinegar for the regular gnats that get in
when we have garden veggies coming in, especially tomatoes and cantaloupe. I think
the wine would be a much better attractant. Will use that next summer.
Merlot is red wine, right?

Even though we have had many nights in the low 20s, I see gnats dotting
the windows outside during the day. I think these critters are evolving to
endure cold temps.

Thought so, especially since Merlot is the name of a red Pierce daylily if I remember
correctly. Thanks Michele for the tip on the wine.

I read last year that the new potting soil has organic matter inside it and is the equivalent of rotting fruit. Made sense to me because I had a huge bag of MG potting mix in the garage the winter before last and every day we saw at least 50 gnats on the window. We were SOH and could not figure it out for the life of us. Blinking

Michelle, thanks for the tip about the red wine. I only have one or two gnats right now and they come from the house plants every time I water them two or three gnats are hatched, must be eggs in the soil or something.
