Visited relatives over the weekend. The first of three different TB irises was blooming in the garden:

Love the crazy stalk. Smiling Really couldn't help with the iris ID though.

I have some that look similar, but wouldn't swear to a match.

Thanks Sherry. Upon first look that seems to be a match - nothing immediately stands out as being different, although happy to be corrected.

Would love to know the ID of this black I received from a family member. I've done a lot of comparisons and can't seem to find a close match to the unruffled falls. Vigorous grower.

Maybe 'Black Hills' or 'Black Castle. I'm guessing it's from the (early?) 50's, maybe '40's..

@crowrita, @DaveinPA what do you guys think?

'Sable Night' is another possibility if there's a bit of veining by the beard. I can't tell from the angle in your picture.

Welcome! Scott! Hurray!

It does look like Scott's NoID has a bit of brown dusting on the beard, like 'Sable Night', but I don't see any veining either.

I think Black Castle is the closest.....that said, there were a ton of blacks....most of them with Sable as a parent or grand parent...from that time frame.

Have to agree with Arlyn. Black Castle. I'd suggest getting a rhizome and growing it along side the NOID black, then comparing everything to include veins, beard color/tipping including in throat, foliage, etc.

Thank you all for your comments on my black NOID! There are a lot of knowledge people here! I've attached a different picture, though I'm not sure it shows much else. I was surprised that Black Castle is not listed on HIPS, though I was able to look it up on wiki irises. Does anyone suggest other sources? Also, I'm always up for trades, so if anyone wants this black, let me know in the spring! Thanks again!

I'm not sure Black Castle is listed anywhere, here, but it's a great resource for research .

This iris was sent to me from a vendor as Bravery. It isn't, since I already have it for comparison. This isn't unattractive, but it wasn't Bravery.

If this was a first year bloom I would think you would need to let it settle into the garden and then judge the bloom next year. Often the first years bloom is smaller than normal. Its color may be off a bit too. I would like to see what it looks like next year then we will give it a go. Smiling

Not even close! Does the vendor site have any that look like that one?

Celia, I was trying to recall what Karin's noid looked like- Wyomissing was it! It's such a soft, lovely iris! Looks like Karin's may have more yellow, but that could be lighting.
