Glen. That dbl sdlg is getting better with every bloom. Lovely.

Cindy. I agree. When it bloomed I was surprised when I read the label as my recall was more like your pic. So, unless the weather changes it radically, it's yet another unknown. Glen. ? Does it look like CLASSIC ROMANCE?? Thumb of 2016-12-14/bron/d4ac29
FFOS on DWAYN DAVID. My daughter drove over this plant when I first got and potted it up. It should be larger, but the heat and wind have been back.

Bron, I don't think it is Classic Romance. It doesn't have an eye or band.

There are remedial options, though?

Ultimately I will have to have the operation, Debra. But colour coding the pollen crosses can be annoying and distressing sometimes. Green and blue and yellow and orange can be tough to distinguish.

Hi Glen,

I lurk on your thread quite a bit but usually don't have time to post.

I have two daylilies that change from a bitone to self depending on the environment. One is Little Red Warbler. Another is a seedling. If either is deprived of water or fertilizer they become bitones. Once I water & feed them their "true" color comes out. I think water is most important though since I only fertilize 1-2x/season.

Yep, going to have to take care of that at some point--your crosses are too good for us to miss out. Any cost-effective way to use shapes or textures for the coding in the meantime? Like using small binder clips (black and silver) and regular paper clips (metal and plastic coated)? That kind of 'stuff'...

Elena. Thank u 4 your observations. My recall of LOIS HALL when I first saw it bloom here was of a single colour. The long dry period may have caused the bi-tone. The plant itself has been vigorous, in that I broke off the top when the thieves were around. The top grew new roots, and the plant in the ground new leaves.

Glen. Hope the surgery outcome makes things better than ever. I am lucky that I probably won't have to wear glasses after the surgery, whenever that will be.

However, my vision is not the reason for my crummy photos. I looked back at pics I took when my daylilies first bloomed. They are nearly all crystal clear.

Because the thieves had dug up daylilies and lots of other plants, I did not want them recognising and digging up LOIS HALL too. I had no tools with me to dig it up so I broke off as much of the top of the fan as I could. I must have got some crown because I planted the top bit and it grew.
I also did it with some others, but some of my unknowns have yet to bloom so don't know if they worked out too.

That is interesting, I may have to try that on a few plants (ones I have lots of first). It would certainly beat digging and dividing! Did you notice if the rooted part that stayed in the ground suffered any changes, did it cause it to create even more fans? I had read somewhere that during a garden tour a woman asked if anyone knew how to get a daylily to create more fans and when no one replied she stomped the daylily and said that is how you do it. Implying that damaging the crown would cause it to create more fans.

Larry. I only recall that I was surprised that the part remaining in the ground grew as well as it did. It may be one like those I have read about that regrows if a piece is left behind when it is dug up. Can't imagine ones with fine roots like EMMA TOMLINSON McHUGH doing that.

I would not be surprised if damaging the crown may stimulate growth of new fans in SOME cultivars. Also might only work if the damaged part remains dry for a while. I have a couple of plants at the moment that I divided and planted a little too high (some into pots and others in the ground. I meant to replant them properly but ended up just putting leafy mulch around them to protect the crown and roots. When the mulch washed away I noticed some strange looking growths. But by the time I replaced the mulch it was clear they would be fans. I will take photos.

Funny you mention that, I was just reading an old column about Ra Hansen, and she advised to plant the crown high and mulch well with oak leaves. She said it would result in more blooms. I actually did that recently with a group of plants, just pretty much sat them on the soil surface, put a little compost around them then mulched them well with shredded leaves, they are doing great so far.

Elena @bxncbx, thanks for that tip. It has been very dry here and it has been hard to keep the water up in some sections of the garden (mainly because our Council charges like a wounded bull for water here). I am going to give the Scarlet Lace clump a thorough soaking individually and watch what happens.
Debra I have been trying different things that look structurally different, like clips, wire plastic, strings, beads and using in combination without being too reliant on colors. Luckily, the season is now down to reblooms and the pollen dabbing is not as demanding.

Great article Larry.
