Thanks Debra. It is steel. It would have required considerable force. My daughter said the post, which is in concrete, was bent somewhat, in a direction away from the impact. Your scenario seems likely except that the letterbox is 15 ft in from the curb and in front of shrubbery and trees. The driver would have to be very drunk to have gone that close to the trees. The strangest thing is that the damage suggests it was inflicted at 90 degrees to the side of the box, ie. parallel to the road which would have required a vehicle to be close alongside the trees.

It is a bit alarming.
Too hot to work outside until late afternoon. Then I moved 16 barrow loads of fill. So at last I can plant more stuff in the shade. My 50 + sdlgs from Della's seeds all look healthy and it will soon be time to pot them up. The sun has really swung around to the South.
I caught MAKING WHOOPEE early b4 it got cooked. It really has a silver sheen in the sun

@Totally_Amazing, Robin, FFO does mean first flower open in a person's garden. Most folks are pretty excited when each daylily cultivar first opens in their garden for the season. Then the next year, we are just as excited to see the ffo again on each cultivar, lol!

If you want to really delve into the nomenclature of the daylily language, attached is the AHS website's Dictionary of Daylily Terms.

Do you have any animals large enough in your area to inflict such damage to your letterbox Bron??? I know north of where I live bears will tear down a birdfeeder that is securely anchored to a pole.. I have seen them knock over the whole pole even when it is cemented in the ground.

Thanks for the suggestion Cindy. Fortunately we don't have bears or other critters which could have caused that damage. It is still a mystery. Hope the new box remains OK. Also I am a bit apprehensive about my latest garden bed which is fairly close to the front footpath, although nothing in it should attract attention. I have placed branches to screen it a bit from the sun and wind.

Kangaroos can be dangerous but you'd have to corner them I think. I have not heard of them inflicting damage to property. Unlike scrub turkeys which can attack wooden house piers. But even their powerful claws would not have done the letterbox.

Just b4 sunrise we had massive thunder lightning and heavy rain. Surprisingly some daylilies look OK. But have to go out.

We had a lot of rain last night. A pity the thunder and lightning was so scarey. I kept watching a big hoop pine on the boundary of my place, hoping it would not get hit as there were clearly some ground strikes not far away. But I thought there was a lot higher stuff around. Sadly before sunrise a tree on the top of Mt Warning was struck and fell and killed a man. It is the place where the first sunrise in Australia can be seen. But also a very isolated high place and dangerous in bad weather.

I have identified the single and poly light yellow as CHARDONNAY. Today both plants each had good doubles.

Ginny. Apparently there is a tall story that people here in Aus. like to tell about giant koalas dropping from trees and savagely attacking people. Seems like people like to see who can spin the biggest/craziest yarn. I had never heard of it before.

We had another night and day of storms. A little more rain, but lots of thunder and lightning to scare my poor dog. Even tho she is now on Prozac I could not settle her and did not get much sleep. She handles it better if we go outside. So we got wet a few times. Today there was a big strike nearby when I was taking this pic. So I raced inside. Thumb of 2016-12-07/bron/e8427c
Late today I noticed a FFE on CHANGING LATITUDES. I didn't think it would be fantastic. I would like it more if the throat were smaller and the eyezone larger.

Bron - thanks for the explanation! Funny Hilarious! Hilarious!
As to the FFE on your Changing Latitudes - this past summer I had several I had ordered with FFEs for me and as they continued to bloom throughout the summer the colors became brighter and the throats and eyezones became much more pronounced. I'm hoping that next summer will be even better. (and neither one is anything close to the picture I saw when I ordered it!!! *Blush* *Blush* )
