Here in Snow Mexico, the Alphabet Soup for gardeners is Entirely Eponymous, beginning with E, we can go Either way...GEnus or spEciEs (and varitiEs if you are Exceptionally Eager. Here are a few E genera to start... Edgeworthia chrysantha, a member of the same family as Daphne (Thymelaeaceae), but more tender. I have grown this through one bad winter in zone 5, with minus 27 C minimum Temp, survived, but it lost its flowers, which open in February. I will show the winter hot box I grow it in if anyone is interested). Anyway here it is and it has a heavenly fragrance, I first saw this shrub at the Governor Generals mansion on Rockland Ave in Victoria a few years ago. A few others to start, many and numerous, Please, bring me your Echinaceas oryour Englemann spruce, any old Es will do. I am not fussy. It's soup for heaven sake.

Here it is...there is hay around the lower part of the shrub. It doesnt LOOK hot, and it is certainly not attractive, but its warmer in there by anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees depending on the outside conditions. Its temporary, we take it down in early early spring. That is very heavy grade plastic. This year we made the roof slanted because the snow caved in the roof last year. When it was 27 below, Celsius, I put a seed starting mat in the back upgainst the fence. Its not pretty but I am sure I would have lost this shrub, which is too big for me to move around in a pot, I think. I can see the buds are still ok, so far so good.

Thank you Carole for the Australian E's... I am so pumped about going there sometime in the next few years, if I can just save enough $$$. Dirt, when did they change that from Chrysothamnus to Ericameria? was that around the same time they revised Aster? I retired from professional botany / biology toxics work not soon after that. Anyway, I grew up with that plant in my back yard and have it growing here on some sandy mounds, not in my yard but a habitat creation project. BTW Dirt, I use some photographic software to give a photographs an artistic treatment, starting in lightroom then photoshop. This one below is a simplification program called Buzsim.

A very prickly "E" - Eryngo (Eryngium leavenworthii). Not a thistle, but you better wear gloves to work around this one.

That is one 'poppin' purple for sure.

Ha! Those little pointy leaves have nabbed me numerous times. But it's an interesting plant so I just deal with it.
